spin action locked up, will not spin, burns belt - most likely diagnosis?

After minor top disassembly to clean out gunk (mainly under agitator), the washer starting failing: squealing and burning belt. Mechanical operation was just fine before this. (frustrating) I have carefully replaced the following:
  • both belts
  • motor rack "glides" and springs, well lubricated (for better belt tension)
  • mounting stem and tub bearing

None of which has solved the problem. Further symptoms: When drive pulley rotated by hand in one direction, agitator oscillates as expected. (agitator also OK when run from cycle with water) When turned in the other direction, a delay; then starts to feel like it's engaging something but then feels locked up. Seems logical this is when the belt starts to slip and burn.

Is this trouble inside the transmission? If so, is that (practically speaking) the Death Knell? (not worth cost/trouble/mess to fix, even if do-it-yourself).
--Thanks--
