We heavily used our 1977 Maytag washer since 1977, then 2 years ago it started smoking. It was the belt. I replaced the two belts recently after a 2 year delay and the washer wouldn't agitate. It runs fine in the drain and spin mode, but in the wash mode, the belt would move 1 inch, and stop and then the smoke.
I did some research on the net and ended up taking the brake off and checking all that stuff. Everthing looks good, including the inside of the brake. After watching several Utube videos, I turned the drive pulley all the way clockwise to the end of the travel and then a little more to overcome what feels like spring return pressure and inserted the grooved piece 3/8" away from the tab on the left side. The agitator then turned, but only in a clockwise motion without agitating, but it turned freely. Since the Utube videos weren't clear, I took off the grooved piece again and turned the drive pulley only to the point where I met resistance and put the tab 3/8" to the left. Now, the belt turns 1" and then stops and smokes.
My question: How do I properly turn the drive pulley and to what position? Or is the trans broken? All I know is that 2 years ago, it smoked and we bought another washer. I don't know if it was agitating at the time. BTW, we can open the lid and the washer doesn't shut down, but I don't think the switch is involved, since the washer goes into spin cycle normally.
Thanks.
